LA Weekly’s fifth annual art party, Artopia, is a celebration of the vibrant arts and culture scene in Los Angeles. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, August 26, 2017, in DTLA at Union Station, a Historic-Cultural monument and “the last of the great train stations.”

For the second year in a row, we have enlisted the help of internet radio network and DJ collective dublab to curate the sights and sounds. From performance artists to DJs to filmmakers and dance troupes, an impressive lineup of artists will fill your senses.

Attendees will have the opportunity to sample cocktails and local cuisine, peruse the work of visual artists, watch performances, and dance the night away. They can also shop in our vendor village, which will feature handmade goods from local artisans and craftspeople.

With a live PELLYVISION broadcast featuring DJs from Adult Contemporary.

A one-day multimedia event featuring over 40 visual artists, performers, and musicians at the LOT 613 warehouse gallery.  Futra has seamlessly fused electronic music and visual art throughout its five-year orbit in Los Angeles.

In its most visionary show to-date, SUPER FUTURE enters into the awakening of our electronic prophecies. The idea manifests both the specter and reverie of our imagined future. Immerse yourself in an evening of retro-future and future-forward artwork - integrating avant-garde art and design, computers, circuits, artificial intelligence, imagined realities, cyber fashion, alternate landscapes, and re-purposed, hacked, experimental and new technology. SUPER FUTURE fashion is encouraged.

These particles charge together to remind us of this simple fact: the future does not exist - it is only an act of belief or imagination – we have seen our SUPER FUTURE.

SOLID STATES RESIDENCY @ COAXIAL

The first immersive art experience from longtime collaborators Alex Pelly and Elaine Carey, Solid States emerged from the desire to combine experiments in interactive video and auditory phenomena in an intermedia, site-specific artwork.

In this examination of unyielding structure and malleability, Pelly and Carey will explore textures of metal hardware through a collection of sculptures. Pelly’s video work will capture the form and movement of each element. The same materials will be used to create Carey’s accompanying soundscapes. Each fixture will be installed in a different area of the gallery, forming an environment that alters depending on the viewer’s location within the space, as they perceive a varying blend of light and sound.

To be filmed, recorded, and arranged on site at Coaxial, the show will open to the public for the first time on Friday, March 24th, followed by a live concert event on Saturday, March 25th that will be a joint PELLYVISION and Experimental Half-Hour broadcast. The show will culminate in a brunch and closing event on Sunday, March 26th.
