DUBLAB’S 20TH ANNIVERSARY AT BEDROCK STUDIOS - SEPTEMBER 21, 2019

An immersive audio/visual installation featuring quadraphonic sound and corresponding audio-reactive video.

In this installation, four stations are set up in all corners of a space, each with a dedicated speaker and video monitor. Different installs have utilized projections or CRTs. Audio tracks are composed of four unique channels that are split among the speaker stations. For each track, a custom video piece is also split into four versions - each reacting to and visualizing its respective audio channel. The audio reactive video component further envelops the audience in the experience, while also highlighting the nuanced spatial composition of the sound. These video pieces were created by Alex Pelly using analog video synthesis and feedback.

Curated by KamranV and Frosty with a soundtrack including Suzanne Ciani’s comeback quadraphonic Buchla modular synth performance recording "LIVE Quadraphonic," Sun Ra's classic "Space is the Place," newly recovered quad tapes from Ed Michel's Impulse! Records archives, a quadraphonic field recording piece by dublab DJ George Jenson, and original quad compositions by $3.33 and Lucky Dragons. The Quadraphonic Sound installation has been exhibited at LACMA as part of their Muse ‘Til Midnight happening, at the dome at MOMA PS1 as part of their Come Together: Music Festival and Label Market, as part of Immerse(d), an event series bringing together artists, scientists, practitioners and technologists to explore how deep immersive music can optimally impact us, individually and collectively, at the Ace Hotel, New York as a stand alone event and as part of DUBLAB’s 20th Anniversary Celebration at Bedrock Studios.
