Tonalism @ LACE

Saturday, November 19 2016
06:00 PM - 06:00 AM

DUBLAB & Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions Present:
Tonalism
An all night ambient music happening

Inspired by La Monte Young’s “Dream House” as well as the work of musicians and composers such as Terry Riley, Yoko Ono and John Cage. Tonalism combines sound and visual elements to create an experience that audiences can enjoy over an extended period of time. Live musicians, DJs and video artists play and perform throughout the night; starting at sunset and ending at sunrise. Complimentary tea and water are provided to all who attend.

Audience members are encouraged to bring pillows, cushions, bean bags and sleeping bags to lay down and enjoy twelve hours of live performances and DJ sets, along with video projections, in a six-speaker surround sound setting. Attendees can also bring their own refreshments, light food and beverages.

FUTRA: Op Art

On Saturday, August 13, FUTRA reveals OP ART, a one-day multimedia event presenting work from 30 visual artists, performers, and musicians at Civic Center Studios, a beautiful 8,000 sq. ft. studio with views overlooking DTLA.

Optical Art plays with the perception of our physical reality, delving into illusions that seep out of hypnotic geometries, immersive experiences, and confounding alterations of space and time. It disrupts the dialogue between the mind and body, while exposing the hyper-reality of our veiled digital age.

DJs Aaron Davis, Knyphy, Warren Nelson, and Zøraya provide a kinetic soundscape to complement a curated exhibition of contemporary artists and visionaries showcasing: mixed media, sculpture, painting, photography, graphic arts, fashion, and installation. Akiko Yamashita, Alex Pelly, astral_projektor, Immanent, Kate Parsons, and Todd Moyer present their video, animation, and projection mapping installations. BioGlitz brings an interactive glitter painting reality. The performance In/Between/Time by mtDNA Dance will take place at 9:30pm followed by Future Choir of Future Eyes at 10pm. The Future Choir musical experiment reinterprets the experience of looking through a crystal into sound. Each facet represents a voice/instrument - exploring time signatures and layering techniques to create sonic landscapes resembling the prismatic architecture of a crystal.

Entry for this multimedia event is $5 at the door from 7pm – 9pm and $10 after. The event is 21+ with a full cash bar. OP ART FASHION is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED.

Futra is a multimedia experience brand that makes the connection between genres, art, and design. Founded in 2011, Futra invites artists of all walks of life; visual arts, experimental, video, performance - in addition to musicians - to find harmony with one another. Together we create engaging and unique experiences throughout Los Angeles.

• GATE - Gate is a free noise project of New Zealander Michael Morley, which began in the mid-'90s. Morley, who has also played in Dead C. and Precious Metal Inc., performed the thick, sonic improvisations that are characteristic of Gate on a tour with Keiji Haino and Thurston Moore in 1994. One of Gate's more widely available recordings, Live in Boston/NYC 1994 (Poon Village), comes from that year and features Lee Ranaldo and Zeena Parkins. Ranaldo and Morley also recorded in the studio, although this material has yet to be released. Gate has several subsequent releases on the Table of the Elements label, including Monolake (1997) and The Wisher Table (1999), as well as other releases on smaller independent labels such as Go For It and Siltbreeze.

Michael Morley will be joined by Gabie Strong and Christopher Reid Martin

• METAL ROUGE - Formed in Auckland New Zealand in 2005 by the duo of Helga Fassonaki and Andrew Scott, initially playing grimy freeform electric string music. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2007, the music took on the form of streamlined horizontal psychedelic continuums. They crafted an intensely personal brand of electrified minimal maximalism at the intersection of New Zealand free noise, NYC loft minimalism and free jazz. Drummer/trombonist Caitlin Mitchell joined from 2009 to 2011, bringing a more aggressive free rock aspect to the group resulting in the ‘Trails’ LP in 2010 and the ‘Then In Shadow’ tape in 2011. Their sets over the last two years have consisted of simple guitar figures strung around drugged minimalist drum pulses interspersed with explosive treble-heavy freeform ragas, fearless outré vocalese and horn accents. Currently bi-coastal with Andrew in Los Angeles and Helga in the New York City they continue to throw ideas across the continent some of which resulted in ‘Soft Erase’ LP (EC010, 2013) and ‘Gamble’ CS (DNT, 2014)

• TELECAVES - Juliette Amoroso and Elaine Carey Haswell craft heavy, improvised sonic arrangements with analog equipment and their shared psychological dysfunctions. Alex Pelly live-mixes VHS feedback textures overtop.
http://www.telecaves.com/

• PETER KOLOVOS - Over more than a decade Peter Kolovos has created an incredibly physical and dynamic musical language using the electric guitar. He plays music that unpredictably flows from electrified fragments of sound which fold and expand in dense layers… Rather than set harmonic or rhythmic structures, he draws form from open sequences of sound events merged and propelled by a distinct internal logic. In his music Kolovos attempts to erase the line between intent and impulse and to create sounds that are immediate and unrepeatable.

DJ Prickle will provide a lush soundtrack between sets

Aaron J - Based in California and a physician by trade, Aaron J heads up the Sure Thing party and mix series, a project which has built a quick following for its support of boundary-pushing artists and new sounds on the rise. Aaron's DJ sets represent the Sure Thing ethos, echoing his curations by bridging the gap between the familiar and the unexpected while staying firmly rooted in the dance floor. Additionally, his own anonymous productions have seen airwave support from the likes of Hodge and Avalon Emerson, and are often made with specific sets in mind to ensure a one-of-a-kind performance.
